Former Arizona prosecutor and State Treasurer candidate Andrei Cherny's call for shining a spotlight on out-of-control spending at all levels of government "rankled" the politicians and bureaucrats gathered at the annual meeting of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, according to the Arizona Republic.
We’ll use the Treasurer’s audit power to go after waste, shine a light on the darkest parts of the government, and eliminate the perks and special deals at taxpayer expense.
Cherny is the first Democrat on a federal or statewide level that Kolbe has endorsed.
Former Arizona prosecutor and State Treasurer candidate Andrei Cherny today challenged opponent Douglas Ducey to a series of four or more debates preceding the general election.
Here's what we know so far about Douglas Ducey: He failed to pay the taxes on his Paradise Valley mansion until the day after he kicked off his campaign for Treasurer.  He did not show up to vote 80% of the time including never voting in a Republican primary for Treasurer or any other state office.  He has refused to reveal his own investments even as every other Treasurer candidate in both parties has done so.  He drove his business into the ditch and his franchisees into bankruptcy and despair.
“I see my role as treasurer as being the tax payer's bulldog and going into state government and looking at where we are putting our state investments and what is happening on Wall Street using the treasurer's audit power that hasn't been used to go after the state bureaucracy.”
Douglas Ducey has been running for Treasurer for six months, and according to his campaign finance filings with the Secretary of State, has managed to receive only 22 contributions from Arizonans outside of Maricopa County.
Cherny's Capitol news conference came a day after The Arizona Republic reported that Ducey had a lien placed on his Paradise Valley home after failing to pay taxes for two years.
"At the end of the day, it's my responsibility," said Ducey, 46, the former CEO of Cold Stone Creamery.
Community leaders joined  former Arizona prosecutor and State Treasurer candidate Andrei Cherny on Monday to condemn Douglas Ducey's failure to pay his property taxes on time in three of the last four years.
I believe that’s the job of the Treasurer and that’s why this latest revelation about Douglas Ducey is so disturbing.

It's been three weeks today since State Treasurer candidate Douglas Ducey's deadline to reveal his personal investments passed.
“We don’t know which stocks and corporate bonds “we the people” of Arizona own,” said Cherny. “This is our money – not the government’s money – not the State Treasurer’s money – and we have a right to know how it’s being spent.”
As a prosecutor, I know that sunlight is the best way to guard against corruption in state government, transparency leads to reform, and information gives citizens the tools to hold their public officials accountable.

In the wake of misleading financial disclosure, Cherny calls on Ducey to reveal his assets and holdings by Monday.

Treasurer hopeful Cherny says state must become solar power leader
Former Arizona Assistant Attorney General and economic policy expert Andrei Cherny today filed over 8,200 nominating signatures in order to qualify for the ballot as a candidate for Arizona State Treasurer.  Since he is unopposed in the primary, he will be the Democratic nominee in November.
The voters have a right to know where Mr. Ducey stands on this important issue.
Arizona is an independent-minded, centrist state with a government bogged down in never-ending partisan trench warfare.
Arizonans have a right to know what government is doing with their money – but that right is being violated every day and its time that changed.
Cherny has grabbed a lot of attention for a race that usually goes relatively unnoticed by Arizona voters.
If I am elected State Treasurer, the days of Wall Street banks and corporations yanking Arizona's chain will come to an end.
The biggest drag on the state economy is not lack of capital, but lack of leadership in the state Capitol. To grow our economy, Arizona needs to become home to a "new entrepreneurial economy" - one that makes it easier for new businesses to thrive.
The billions of dollars managed by the State Treasurer are the people’s money and they have the right to know what is going on.
Cherny said, “I’m especially proud of the fact that the great majority of our contributors gave $100 or less.  We are doing what we set out to do: build a grassroots movement for change to turn our economy around.”
"People are engaged," said Cherny, who hopes to use the Treasurer's Office as a platform to resurrect the Arizona economy. "People are feeling like we can actually do something different in this state."
"We as a state are going to have to decide, are we going to be a state that is competing with all these other states that are moving fast into the future, or are we competing just for the low wage jobs out there? This is the moment where we're going to have to decide, over the next couple of years. With things like solar, we don't get another chance. This race between all these states and countries won't happen for much longer....It's an all-hands-on-deck kind of moment right now."
Mr. Cherny is a former White House advisor who has worked across party lines to put in place ideas that work in the 21st century.
Job creation and education investment are two things that Andrei Cherny believes need to be taken more seriously in Yuma and throughout Arizona.
If Arizona misses its chance to become a leader in solar energy, the state won't get any second chances, according to former state Assistant Attorney General Andrei Cherny.
“We don't have the right kind of economic policies in place,” Cherny said. “It's like the gang that can't shoot straight.”
Arizona's deadline for a passed budget has come and gone and Cherny says it's irresponsible that the legislature is on holiday break.
I believe Arizonans deserve a better return on their tax returns, that we need new economic policies that invest in our people and in our future, and that we have to revolutionize the way our government works. I believe we need new leadership that will turn Arizona’s economy around and that’s why today I’m announcing my candidacy for State Treasurer.
Cherny said that if elected he would invest more of the state's assets in Arizona firms in an effort to fuel job creation over the long term. He criticized state economic policies as ineffective.
"Our state leaders' decisions have put us in the hole economically and it is going to take new leadership to turn our economy around," Cherny said.
Cherny said policymakers have miscalculated the importance of diversifying the workforce, which has exacerbated Arizona's economic trouble. He said too many hard-working people have been laid off from their jobs and have lost their homes.  "This didn't have to happen," he said. "Our state leaders failed to invest in the jobs of the future."
"Investing in Arizona, investing in industries of the future here in this state that are going to reap a good rate of return for us, but also create new jobs is more responsible than just putting that money on Wall Street," Cherny said during an announcement in front of the state Capitol. "We have lost hundreds of millions over the past year. I don't believe that alone is the prudent way of investing our money."
“We need a Treasurer that’s going to be pushing an economic plan that will bring long-term prosperity to all of our citizens,” Cherny said.
