Mayor Phil Gordon Endorses Cherny

July 20, 2012

Former Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon endorsed former Clinton White House aide Andrei Cherny in the Ninth District Democratic primary today, explaining that Cherny's record of accomplishments demonstrates his ability to bring real change to Washington.

"The status quo is unacceptable and Andrei's experience in the Clinton White House working to create economic growth is exactly what our state and country needs," said Gordon.

"Andrei Cherny helped President Clinton create millions of new jobs, expand the children's health insurance, and make federal student aid more available for working families," said Gordon. "Those are exactly the type of bold steps that our country needs now to regain its economic footing."

Cherny said he welcomed support from Gordon, who was elected mayor of the nation's sixth largest city in 2003 and served through 2011.

“Mayor Gordon's vision of downtown Phoenix as a center of science, education, and medicine has been transformative for our state's economy," said Cherny. "His policies at the city were a template for creating long-term economic growth through education and scientific research."

Gordon joins others who have endorsed Cherny, including former President Bill Clinton, former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, former Arizona Democratic Party chairman Jim Pederson, State Rep. Ruben Gallego, Phoenix Councilman Michael Nowakowski, former State Rep. Rae Waters, and Mesa Councilman Dennis Kavanaugh.
