Goddard: Cherny an Arizona 'Work Horse'
February 20, 2012
by Seth Scott
I have to say that our campaign is a bit overwhelmed at how much support Andrei has received right out of the gate. We're particularly proud that Terry Goddard -- who served our state for eight years as attorney general and was an outstanding mayor of Phoenix -- has put his full support behind Andrei. Earlier today, Goddard sent an e-mail that explains why -- in the field of excellent candidates -- Andrei is the best choice for our community. We thought it was so powerful that we'd like to share it with you:
Dear Friend,
As Arizona celebrates its 100th birthday, we look back on the special leaders who shaped our state's journey. Arizona's progress would not have been possible but for a journey begun in February 1912 –when Carl Hayden began his passage to Washington, D.C. to be sworn in as our state's first representative on Capitol Hill.
Senator Hayden went on to serve our state in Congress for 56 years, and his legacy endures. He fought big fights against entrenched interests, and overcame tough opposition to win pivotal victories for Arizonans. But none of it happened by accident. Carl Hayden was able to accomplish so much because, as he always said, he strove to be a "work horse" instead of a "show horse."
Today, when so much is on the line, we need another "work horse" to represent us in Congress. Arizona Democrats are fortunate to have excellent candidates seeking our vote in the new Ninth Congressional District, but I believe one is uniquely ready to serve in the great tradition of Carl Hayden.
That's why I'm proud to support Andrei Cherny. In an age where too many "show horse" politicians measure their success in cable talk show appearances, Andrei has won real results because of his hard work, perseverance, and ability to wage and win the toughest fights.
I hired Andrei as an assistant attorney general, because I knew he would be tenacious in the courtroom, take on corporate criminals and mortgage fraud artists and put them behind bars. That is exactly what he did.
He joined forces with Elizabeth Warren and other progressive reformers to begin the push for a consumer watchdog agency to stop credit card companies from preying on working families. Despite initial opposition in both parties, the "work horses" weren't deterred – and they beat back the largest army of Wall Street lobbyists ever assembled to create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Andrei has fought for us. Now he needs our help.
We're only a few days into Arizona's next 100 years, and the challenges our state faces are daunting. But, if we choose the right leaders to fight for our future, we can make our next century even brighter.
Let's send an Arizona "work horse" to Congress. Let's send Andrei Cherny.
Sincerely yours,
Terry Goddard
