More than three years into the worst recession in decades, with Arizona losing more jobs and experiencing a worse budget situation than any other state, with states like Colorado and New Mexico already emerging from the downturn, the Arizona House Republicans have released an economic and jobs plan.
While I clearly wish we hadn't gone all these years without any action, I applaud them for finally putting forward a plan. Their plan has some good ideas -- in fact, the very ideas I've been advocating all across Arizona for the past year. But giant tax cuts for the biggest corporations that don't take effect for another three years aren't the place where we can get the most bang for our buck.
We need action on jobs, relief to middle class families, and measures to spur entrepreneurship and innovation now. And that's where the emphasis should be placed.
Most of all, we need something more than a piece of a paper released in an election year. Republicans and Democrats in the Legislature need to set partisanship aside and come together to see what they can agree on immediately and then pass it into law. Arizonans are hurting -- but they're also hopeful that we can not only rebuild our economy but fundamentally turn it around.
